15-30 Minutes Commute

Howard Hughes Promenade - Closest to LAX. It is an outdoor mall, with restaurants, a theatre and some retail shops.
Getting there:
Take Lot C Shuttle to Culver City Bus #6 to Center Drive, then walk to the mall.

Westfield Culver City - Next closest mall to LAX. It's in the same direction from LAX as Howard Hughes Center, although Westfield Culver City is much larger. The mall features anchor stores Macy's and JC Penney, as well as a Target department store, a Nordstrom Rack clothing outlet store and a Best Buy electronics store. There are also familiar mall boutique shops such as H&M, Coach, G by Guess, and Express.

Take Lot C Shuttle to Culver City Bus #6 to Culver City Transit Center, then walk to the mall.

30-60 Minutes Commute

South Bay Galleria - It is an indoor mall with department stores, restaurants and a food court. This mall is on the same route as Del Amo Fashion Center (5 minutes farther), so you could conceivably go to both.
Getting there:
From LAX, a bus ride takes 30-45 minutes each way (including transfers).
Take Lot G Shuttle to Metro Green Line train to Hawthorne Station, then Metro Local Line 40 to the mall (other routes exist, see Metro.net).

Del Amo Fashion Center - (great choice!) An indoor and outdoor mall with department stores, restaurants and a food court. There is a movie theater and a bowling alley. This mall is a great choice because it's within reasonable travel distance from LAX, and offers a wide variety of stores and entertainment. This is one of the largest malls in the US, so you can probably spend your entire layover here. You will pass South Bay Galleria on the way to Del Amo Fashion Center, so if you have some extra time, you could stop there as well. If you like BBQ food, try Lucille's Smokehouse Bar-B-Que, which is located in the mall parking lot near Hawthorne Blvd (reservations are suggested).

Take Lot C Shuttle to Metro Local Line 232 to Hawthorne Blvd / Pacific Coast Hwy, and then Metro Limited Line 344 to the mall (other routes exist, see Metro.net).

From LAX, a bus ride takes less than 15 minutes each way (including transfers).
Take Torrance #3 from Carson Street at Del Amo Center, to the end of the bus route at Redondo Beach Pier.

Santa Monica Place / Third Street Promenade - (great choice!) Santa Monica is a pleasant coastal community offering outstanding shopping selections, plus entertainment at the Pier, sidewalk performers and countless venues. For the combination of shopping and entertainment, this is the best choice. Santa Monica Place is an indoor mall with department stores and a food court. Third Street Promenade is an outdoor street shopping zone with stores, restaurants, a food court, street performers. Nearby attractions are Santa Monica Pier (walking distance) as well as Venice Beach and Montana Avenue (both require an additional bus ride).

Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills - World-famous shopping district in Beverly Hills. Westfield's Century City Mall is about five minutes away, so you might be able to visit both. Rodeo Drive is popular with tourists, but if you are looking for sights of famous people, you will have better luck looking in shops along Robertson Blvd (see Shopping 60-180 minutes from LAX).

Jewelry District, Downtown LA - you will find a large concentration of jewelry outlets along Hill Street between 6th and 7th Streets. Some are large plazas containing hundreds of stores inside. The District extends east to Broadway and west to Olive Street, and south to 8th Street.
Getting there:
From LAX, a bus ride takes 30-60 minutes each way (including transfers).
Take Flyaway Union Station, then Metro Rail Red Line train to the Pershing Square Metro Station. walk to Hill Street and then cross 6th Street. You will find quite a few stores along Hill Street between 6th and 7th Streets.
